Colorado Rockies Enter 2026 With Hope, But Fans Brace for Another Tough Season

An in-depth look at why I see cautious optimism for the Rockies in 2026, despite another potentially brutal season ahead.

After one of the worst seasons in franchise history, the Colorado Rockies are trying to reset — but the road ahead in 2026 looks rugged. With a daunting 43-119 finish in 2025 — the worst record in baseball last year — expectations are low, and many fans fear more tough baseball is coming.

A Franchise at a Crossroads

The Rockies have struggled on the field for years, with multiple 100-loss campaigns and no playoff appearances since 2018. Their pitching staff endured historic issues, repeatedly ranking among the league’s worst in several key categories.

While the ownership group and front office insist they want success, progress has been slow. That reality has many observers and fans prepared for another painful season, especially given the lack of big-name free-agent signings so far.

Colorado’s offseason moves haven’t dramatically changed the roster’s outlook. The club did sign veteran pitcher Michael Lorenzen and add some bullpen depth with players like Brennan Bernardino and Keegan Thompson — solid role players, but nothing that screams immediate turnaround.

New Leadership, New Direction?

Paul DePodesta

One of the biggest offseason changes is in the front office. Paul DePodesta — known for his analytical approach — was hired as the Rockies’ president of baseball operations, replacing the previous regime. A fresh perspective at the top could be valuable, but the real impact won’t be clear until spring and beyond.

On the field, Warren Schaeffer returns as the full-time manager after serving as interim last season. He’s focused on culture, energy and development — things that don’t always show up in the standings right away, but are critical for long-term change.

Young Talent Provides Glimmers of Hope

Despite the bleak recent results, Colorado isn’t devoid of talent. The Rockies boast several young hitters who could be cornerstones if they take steps forward:

  • Ezequiel Tovar — a Gold Glove–caliber shortstop who showed flashes of star potential before a down 2025 season.

  • Hunter Goodman, Brenton Doyle, and Jordan Beck — young bats with upside who could drive the offense if they rebound or continue to develop.

  • Mickey Moniak — former No. 1 overall pick who demonstrated power potential and could settle into a solid role in the lineup.

There’s also promise on the mound from Chase Dollander, the club’s 2023 first-round pick, who struggled as a rookie but has shown better results in the minors and could be more comfortable in 2026.

Is 2026 a Rebuild — or a Plateau?

Brenton Doyle

Realistically, a full turnaround in 2026 would require a number of breaks — and the Rockies aren’t betting on miracles. They’re in one of baseball’s toughest divisions, facing teams like the Dodgers, Giants, Padres and Diamondbacks, all of whom figure to be competitive.

For many pundits, success won’t be defined by wins and losses so much as progress:

  • Keeping losses under 100 games
  • Seeing tangible improvement from young core players
  • Building consistent roles and growth on both offense and the mound

If Colorado can accomplish those modest goals, many would see that as a step in the right direction — even if the team remains out of playoff contention.

Fan Sentiment: Hopeful or Resigned?

Rockies fans have endured a tough stretch of seasons, and frustration runs deep. Some are eager for organizational change, while others remain skeptical about whether significant on-field improvement is imminent. The lack of splashy offseason moves so far has only amplified that tension.

Still, every new season brings hope. With several exciting young players and a new leadership vision, the Rockies are betting that 2026 will be a foundation–building year — one that could eventually lead back toward competitiveness.
